Brother - a short story by Anania Manuel

On one fine day in Christchurch, There were no clouds to be seen in the sky, it was a nice clear bluey colour. The trees were as green as ever, this was the last day of Summer. As i walk out of school to catch the bus, the bus goes past me, yet again i had missed it.

This was the third time in a row i had missed. I think it was because of all the time i had spent looking for my brother instead of heading out to the bus stop to wait for the bus. Anyway i finally got to the bus stop having to drag my little brother there, he had little legs so he couldn’t move as fast as i could, i thought to myself, “maybe we should go to burger king for a snack, yeah why not”.

When the bus finally came (it took like 1 hour to arrive) we got on Haukapua went off and found a seat for us while i paid for our bus ride. He always liked to sit up at the back because he could see out the window. When we were halfway to our destination i noticed  Haukapua had fell asleep, this usually happened, he’s very little so he never has enough energy to last him a full day.

We got to Burger King as per usual he went off to play the games at the back of the restaurant while i ordered our food i had got 8 Cheese burgers 2 medium sized drinks and large fries it seemed heaps or us but i knew we could handle it. I loved Cheese burgers from Burger King i just can’t explain it i just really love them the taste was heavenly. I spilt the cheese burgers up, 3 for him 5 for me, then we started munching on them.

He had demolished his burgers like a hungry predator looking for his weak prey then he says “more please”, i gave him one of mine to eat he gobbles it down once again i gave him a few chips he had eaten them too so i told him to wait i'll go get more after i had eaten my burgers

After we had finished eating mum had rung us to come home for dinner, we were to full for dinner but we still went home to find more Burger King, i felt like i was in paradise.

Note from Whaea Naomi: Anania has successfully used descriptions of the exterior, observable world to offer the reader ongoing insights into his interior world. For example we can tell from the words he uses to describe his little brother and his little brother's actions, that Anania feels very warmly protective of him. This pathos is communicated with considerable confidence to the heart of the reader. This is all the more commendable because Anania has created a rich emotional experience for the reader while simply describing an ordinary day.
